Minor Ladies Championship Shield Football Final v Clanna Gael Fontenoy
On Saturday evening our U18 ladies football team played Clanna Gael Fontenoy in Ringsend in the division 3 shield final.
The Raheny girls started brightly, scoring some great points and the first goal of the game. Clanna Gael soon found their feet and got some quality scores of their own. However, the second quarter was played on Raheny’s terms as they showed fantastic teamwork to put Clanna Gael under pressure. In this period Raheny scored three more goals. By the interval Raheny lead by 10. Half time score 4-5 to 1-4.
The flood lights at Ringsend were switched on for the second half. This provided Clanna Gael with the spark they needed. Clanna Gael upped their performance and brought their A game to Raheny. By mid way through the second half Clanna Gael had scored four goals to wipe out Raheny’s half time advantage. Coming into the last 10 minutes, Clanna Gael scored their sixth goal to put them a few points ahead. With all momentum going Clanna Gael’s way, it looked like they’d get over the line. The Raheny girls didn’t see it like this, as they found another gear. In the closing stages Raheny finished very strong and got a number of points to see them take the win.
Credit must be given to both teams for playing a very competitive and entertaining game. Thanks to all family and friends that came over to support the teams.
Final score 5-13 to 6-6.
Well done to all the girls that played this year. With 33 girls playing in the U17 league win and 28 girls playing in the U18 division 3 championship, it really was a team effort. With all players still underage for minor next year, we look forward to 2019..
